ndia offers world class treatment for colon cancer. Treatment of colon cancer depends largely on the stage of the cancer. The three main treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Surgery for early-stage colon cancer

If your colon cancer is very small, you will be advised a minimally invasive procedure, such as:

• Removing polyps during colonoscopy. If your cancer is small, localized in a polyp and in a very early stage, it would be possible to remove it completely during a colonoscopy.
• Endoscopic mucosal resection. If the polyps are larger, a small amount of the lining of the colon will also be removed in a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection.
• Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. This approach would be required when polyps cannot be removed during colonoscopy. The procedure is called laparoscopic surgery and has performed through several small incisions in your abdominal wall, Instruments with attached cameras display magnified images of your colon on a video monitor. Samples may also be drawn from lymph nodes in the area where the cancer is located.

Surgery for invasive colon cancer

• Partial colectomy. The surgeon removes the part of your colon that contains the cancer, along with a margin of normal tissue on either side of the cancer. It is often possible to reconnect the healthy portions of your colon or rectum.

Surgery for advanced cancer

If the cancer is very advanced or overall health is very poor, surgery may be proposed to relieve a blockage of the colon or other conditions in order to improve symptoms. This surgery is not done to cure cancer, but instead to relieve signs and symptoms, such as bleeding and pain.
If the cancer has spread only to the liver and if overall health is otherwise good, you may be advised surgery to remove the tumour from your liver. Chemotherapy may be used before or after this type of surgery.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses medicines to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy for colon cancer is usually given after surgery if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. The purpose is to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy may be used before surgery to shrink the cancer.
Chemotherapy can also be administered to relieve symptoms of colon cancer that has spread to other areas of the body.

Radiation therapy

Drugs that target specific defects that allow cancer cells to grow are available to patients with advanced colon cancer
Targeted drugs can be given along with chemotherapy or alone. These are typically reserved for people with advanced colon cancer.
